High above the Danube, in the middle of a dreamy park, lies the enchanting Artstetten Castle, flanked by seven characteristic towers. Here, the memory of the heir to the throne Franz Ferdinand and his wife, Duchess Sophie von Hohenberg, who both fell victim to an assassination attempt in Sarajevo in 1914 and found their final resting place here, is preserved.

The Archduke Franz Ferdinand Museum gives visitors an insight into the eventful life of the heir to the throne and his family. In a special theme that changes every year, a focus of his multifaceted life is taken up and presented to the visitor.

In addition, a historic castle park awaits visitors, which is still used and maintained by the owners themselves. Here, the history of the aristocratic landlords of the past becomes tangible and is underlined by the beauty of the historic park landscape.

In the extensive Artstetten Palace Park, you can see not only ancient, impressive trees or the idyllic bathing pavilion at Archduke Carl Ludwig's "pool", but also rudiments of the park landscapes of Emperor Franz I and Archduke Franz Ferdinand.

From May to July, more than 1000 peonies present themselves here in their full flowering splendour. Particularly worth seeing is also the chestnut avenue laid out according to geomantic guidelines or the former terraced rose garden with its two "spitting men".

"Snacking on nobility"
In the former farm garden, old, rare fruit and garden plants with "aristocratic names" found a new home in order to arouse interest in these old varieties and pass on knowledge about them. Soon, visitors will be able to taste the "Kaiser Wilhelm apple" or a "Countess of Paris" pear right on the spot or purchase jams, juices and brandies made from these fruits in the shop.
